Varoulko Seaside, Piraeus

It was in 1987 when Varoulko restaurant (its name translating into winch) was born in Piraeus. Along with it came a new style of seafood cooking created by Lefteris Lazarou. Lazarou was the first chef in Greece to cook a seafood menu at a fine dining restaurant and to introduce the public to less known and previously neglected types of fish. Many of his dishes became very successful and are still recognized as all-time classics.

Lefteris Lazarou never stopped being innovative in his cooking. His imagination, his influences from his previous travels and the time he spent as a galley cook, together with his accomplished technique lead to new exciting dishes and to flavors that were rich yet elegantly complex. Lazarou received a great number of awards through the years.

The most important recognition though and the one that contributed to his worldwide recognition had already come in the form of a Michelin star in 2002 –the first one ever awarded to a chef serving Greek cuisine. Lazarou holds his star since then. Today he has a team with great experience including Chef de cuisine Ioannis Parikos.

I love wine.

I just love this divine liquid!

And I want to share my passion with you. I want to have you taste wines that are truly unique, hand-crafted, from extremely low yields. I have managed to source old vintage bottles directly from the wineries and private cellars that are difficult to find in the market. The wines come from selected plots with age-old vines, high altitude sites and even phylloxera-free vineyards. These are the ‘Greek Wine Diamonds’.

What inspired this event?

Most WSET-qualified wine educators focus in educating the trade, sommeliers and other professionals. It is not easy to find high-end tastings available to consumers, or visitors of Greece. Since I started my career as a mere consumer of wine, I want to open this magic door to more and more people. Wine –even of this class– is for the people anyway. ‘Greek Wine Diamonds’ is a premium wine Masterclass followed by a wine & food pairing dinner.

The quality level of these wines demanded a similarly outstanding venue. Thus, I have chosen Michelin-starred restaurant Varoulko, run by prestigious chef Lefteris Lazarou. Mr. Lazarou is the first ever Greek chef to have received a Michelin Star and is considered one of the most influential chefs in Greece ever. Varoulko is located in Piraeus Mikrolimano, a small harbor with fishing and sailing boats just 20-25’ from the center of Athens.

This is a truly unforgettable experience that you will remember for years!

I will be happy to see you there.
